My Word of the Year | Wholehearted
Over the last year, I have been going through some big changes, and I am continuing on that same path. While beginning to think on what word I would like to focus on this year, I found myself bouncing between several different words: forward, fresh, happy, complete, imagine, thrive, intention. I also thought about the word wholehearted.
For me, this word is synonymous with Brené Brown. I was lucky enough to attend a small, local event where Brené was speaking after writing The Gifts of Imperfection. I had seen her TED talk on vulnerability and had heard a little about her and was very excited to be in this audience. Although Brené lives in Houston and works at the University of Houston (Go Coogs!), this talk was in San Antonio. I was a bundle of nerves, but did have her sign my copy of the book. I thoroughly loved getting to hear her speak in person.
Let me just interrupt this story to tell you that I am NOT a reader. And what I mean by that is that I don’t typically read for pleasure. Honestly, I usually fall asleep before I get a few pages in. I blame genetics. Anyone that knows my mother and grandfather are aware that I get it from them. ANYWAY, I did start reading this book and I really loved Brené’s writing. I was completely engaged. The topic of being authentic and wholehearted really spoke to my heart.
Not long ago, I was having one of those moments where you realize something or someone put you in a bad mood. With all of these changes I’m going through, I don’t want some outside influence to have a negative effect on me. I thought of two things - “Let it go!!!” and “Don’t take anything personally” from The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz.
I want to use this year to focus my energy on living a wholehearted life and working on The Four Agreements. I also plan to use the 10 Guideposts from The Gifts of Imperfection to help me on this journey.
I created this piece of art to have as a visual reminder of my intention this year. The small writing says: compassion, connection, courage, imperfect, intention, grace, gratitude, joy and love. For me, wholehearted can also mean complete sincerity and commitment, positive, devoted, dedicated, enthusiastic and so much more.
Wishing you all the best on your 2017 journey!
